Understand the specification

What Is a Packaging Finish?

A packaging finish is a surface treatment or decorative effect applied to packaging to change its appearance, feel, protection or presentation. It forms one part of the overall packaging specification alongside the material, printing method and box structure.

Material

What the packaging is made from.

The board or substrate, such as kraft board, folding boxboard or corrugated material.

Printing

How colours and graphics are reproduced.

The method used to transfer artwork and branding onto the packaging.

Finish

What happens to the surface.

A treatment used for matte, gloss, metallic or tactile effects.

Structure

How the packaging is constructed.

The shape, folds, panels, closures and structural features.

Choose a Finish by Requirement

Start with the result you want your packaging to achieve.

Lamination for Appearance and Protection

Lamination applies a thin protective film over the printed surface.

Matte Lamination

A softer, less reflective surface.

  • Low-reflection appearance
  • Smooth surface
  • Understated presentation
  • Protective laminated layer
  • Compatible with selected finishes
Explore Matte Lamination →

Gloss Lamination

For shine and stronger visual colour.

  • Reflective surface
  • High-shine appearance
  • More vivid printed colours
  • Protective laminated layer
  • Easier-to-wipe surface

Decorative & Premium Finishes

Use finishes selectively to draw attention to key artwork.

Foil Stamping

Heat, pressure and tooling transfer metallic or pigmented foil to logos, lettering, borders and details.

Let the Product Become Part of the Packaging

Window patching combines structural design with product presentation.

  • Window shape and dimensions
  • Window position
  • Film specification
  • Product visibility
  • Strength around the opening
  • Relationship with folds and panels
  • Placement in the structural dieline

The window should be planned as part of the box structure, not added as an afterthought.

Finishes by Packaging Material

Start With the Packaging Material

A finish cannot be selected independently of the surface underneath it. Board type, coating, texture and printing method can all influence the result.

Finishes Don’t Have to Work Alone

Two or more processes can sometimes create contrast between colour, shine, texture and depth.

Matte lamination and Spot UV finish combination

Matte + Spot UV

Low-reflection background with selected gloss areas.

Matte lamination and foil finish combination

Matte + Foil

Understated matte with metallic or coloured details.

Embossing and foil finish combination

Embossing + Foil

Physical depth combined with visual emphasis.

Printed packaging with a window patch

Print + Window

Branding around a transparent viewing area.

Combinations must be assessed against material, artwork, registration tolerances, tooling and manufacturing process.

Design the Finish Into Your Artwork

Special finishes should be considered while artwork is being prepared—not after the design is complete.

Foil Stamping

Create clean vector artwork on a separate named layer.

Spot UV

Show coated areas separately from standard artwork.

Embossing & Debossing

Supply the raised or recessed area as vector artwork.

Window Patching

Include window position and dimensions in the dieline.

Lamination

Specify it within the overall production specification.

Do not alter the structural dieline to accommodate a finish without checking first.

Packaging Finish FAQs

What is the difference between printing and finishing?

Printing reproduces the main colours, graphics, text and branding. Finishing refers to additional treatments such as lamination, foil, Spot UV or embossing. A project can use printing alone or combine it with finishes.

What is the difference between matte and gloss lamination?

Matte lamination is lower-reflection and understated; gloss lamination is more reflective and can make colours appear more vivid. Both apply a protective film.

Can foil stamping be applied to kraft packaging?

Often, but suitability depends on the exact kraft substrate, texture, artwork, foil and production method.

Can Spot UV be used with matte lamination?

Yes. This combination creates strong contrast, but compatibility and registration must be confirmed for the material and design.

What is the difference between embossing and debossing?

Embossing raises selected artwork; debossing presses it inward. Both create tactile detail with different physical effects.

Can more than one finish be used on the same box?

Potentially. Compatibility depends on substrate, process sequence, artwork, registration and tooling.

Which packaging finish is best for a premium appearance?

There is no single best finish. Matte is restrained, foil is metallic, Spot UV adds contrast, and embossing adds physical depth.

Do special finishes require separate artwork?

Many do. Foil, Spot UV and embossing/debossing normally need clearly identified vector artwork elements or layers.
