Kraft Materials and Board Options

Select the Kraft Board for Strength, Print and Product Use

Kraft boards can look similar while providing very different levels of rigidity, print quality and transit protection. The correct grade should be selected around the product, box structure and intended use.

Material Selection

Board thickness should not be selected by appearance alone. Product weight, opening style, print coverage and handling conditions all affect performance.

Brown kraft paperboard used for folding cartons and sleeves Folding Board
01

Kraft Paperboard

A smooth folding board used for sleeves, cartons and lightweight retail packaging where clean creasing and print presentation are important.

  • Retail cartons and sleeves
  • Good surface for detailed print
  • Suitable for lightweight products
Corrugated kraft board with visible fluted centre Protective Board
02

Corrugated Kraft

A fluted board structure used where the packaging must provide increased rigidity, stacking strength and protection during shipping or handling.

  • Mailer and shipping boxes
  • Improved impact protection
  • Available in different flute grades
Recycled kraft packaging board made with recovered fibre Recovered Fibre
03

Recycled Kraft

Kraft board containing recovered fibre for suitable retail, ecommerce and secondary packaging applications where natural variation is acceptable.

  • Natural recycled appearance
  • Suitable for many box formats
  • Print results vary by board surface
Printing on Kraft Packaging

Plan the Print Around the Natural Kraft Surface

Brown kraft is not a neutral white printing surface. Its natural colour remains visible beneath many inks and can change the appearance of light colours, photographs and fine artwork.

We therefore review the board, artwork, print coverage and production quantity together before recommending a printing method.

Before Printing

What Changes When Artwork Is Printed on Brown Kraft?

Kraft board becomes part of the final artwork because its natural colour remains visible through many printed areas. The print setup must therefore be planned around the board rather than treated in the same way as white paperboard.

01

Board Colour

The natural brown tone can affect light inks and colour accuracy.

02

Artwork Coverage

Solid areas, fine details and photographs require different planning.

03

White Ink

White ink may be required beneath selected colours or artwork elements.

Our Recommendation

Review the artwork against a kraft-coloured proof or material sample before production, especially where colour matching, pale tones or photographic detail are important.

01

Flexographic Printing

A practical method for logos, text and simplified artwork on corrugated kraft packaging.

Best suited to: corrugated boxes
02

Digital Printing

Suitable for detailed graphics, prototypes, personalised artwork and shorter production runs.

Best suited to: short and detailed runs
03

Lithographic Printing

Provides refined colour, fine detail and broader artwork coverage for premium presentation packaging.

Best suited to: premium printed cartons
04

White and Custom Inks

White ink, CMYK and spot colours can be planned around the tone and absorbency of the board.

Best suited to: controlled brand colours
Kraft Packaging Finishes

Add Texture, Contrast and Function Without Hiding the Kraft Surface

A finish should support the product and brand rather than cover the natural character of kraft board. Selected details such as foil, embossing, varnish or a window can create distinction while leaving the material visible.

The finish, board surface and printed artwork should be reviewed together before production.

Matt lamination applied to kraft packaging 01 Surface Finish

Matt Lamination

Creates a smooth, low-reflection surface that softens printed colours and gives the packaging a controlled, understated appearance.

  • Reduced surface glare
  • Softer visual finish
Gloss lamination applied to printed kraft packaging 02 Surface Finish

Gloss Lamination

Adds shine and stronger visual contrast, helping printed colours and selected artwork appear brighter on the natural kraft surface.

  • Higher surface shine
  • Stronger colour contrast
Spot UV detail applied to a kraft packaging box 03 Selective Detail

Spot UV

Applies a gloss coating to selected areas such as a logo, pattern or product name while the surrounding kraft surface remains visible.

  • Selective gloss detail
  • Useful for logo emphasis
Metallic foil stamping applied to kraft packaging 04 Decorative Detail

Foil Stamping

Adds metallic or coloured foil to selected artwork, creating contrast against the muted and tactile appearance of kraft board.

  • Metallic or coloured foil
  • Suitable for premium details
Embossed logo detail on kraft packaging 05 Tactile Detail

Embossing and Debossing

Raises or recesses selected artwork to introduce texture and depth without relying on heavy print coverage or additional colour.

  • Raised or recessed detail
  • Works well with simple artwork
Die-cut product window in a kraft packaging box 06 Structural Feature

Die-Cut Windows

Integrates product visibility into the box structure, allowing customers to see the product while the kraft board remains the dominant packaging material.

  • Improves product visibility
  • Custom window shapes available
Why Kraft

Why Businesses Choose Kraft Packaging

Kraft packaging is selected for more than its natural appearance. The material can support efficient packing, product presentation, printed branding and delivery when the structure and board grade are specified correctly.

Its value comes from balancing appearance, performance and material efficiency rather than treating kraft as one standard type of box.

Specification Before Appearance

The best result comes from selecting the board, structure, dimensions and print method as one connected packaging specification.

Material Structure Print Delivery
01
Material Choice

Responsible Material Selection

Kraft packaging gives brands a natural material appearance, but the grade should still be selected according to strength, print and product requirements.

  • Natural brown board surface
  • Multiple recycled-fibre options
02
Brand Presentation

Recognisable Kraft Character

The colour, texture and visible fibres of kraft board create a distinctive presentation that can remain recognisable even with restrained printing.

  • Strong natural identity
  • Works with minimal artwork
03
Product Protection

Structures Built Around the Product

Folding cartons, mailers and corrugated boxes can be adapted around product dimensions, weight, handling and transit risk.

  • Paperboard and corrugated formats
  • Custom inserts and dividers
04
Material Efficiency

Better Use of Board and Internal Space

Correct dimensions and board selection can reduce unnecessary material, oversized packaging and unused space around the packed product.

  • Product-led dimensions
  • Reduced unused internal volume
05
Format Flexibility

One Material Across Multiple Box Styles

Kraft can be used across retail cartons, mailers, sleeves, food boxes, displays and protective shipping formats.

  • Retail and ecommerce formats
  • Food, gifting and shipping uses

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Custom Kraft Packaging

Find practical answers about kraft materials, printing, box structures, artwork preparation, food packaging and production planning.

Packaging requirements vary by product, so the final recommendation should always be based on the packed item, intended use and delivery conditions.

Kraft Packaging Planning and Production

06 Answers
01 Can kraft packaging be custom printed?

Yes. Kraft packaging can be printed with logos, brand colours, product details, patterns and other artwork. The most suitable printing process depends on the board surface, artwork complexity, print coverage and production quantity.

Light colours may appear different on brown kraft than they do on white paperboard.
02 Which kraft material should I choose?

Folding kraft paperboard is commonly used for retail cartons, sleeves and lightweight product packaging. Corrugated kraft is more suitable for mailers, delivery boxes and heavier products that require additional rigidity and protection.

Product weight, box style and delivery conditions should be reviewed together.
03 Can kraft boxes include windows or inserts?

Kraft boxes can be designed with die-cut windows, product inserts, dividers, holders and internal trays. These features should be planned around the product dimensions, packed weight and opening style.

Inserts should be included when confirming the final internal dimensions.
04 Is kraft packaging suitable for food products?

Kraft packaging can be produced for many food applications, but the material, coating and construction must be selected according to direct food contact, grease resistance, temperature and storage conditions.

The intended food use should be confirmed before the material specification is approved.
05 Can you help prepare the artwork and dieline?

Yes. Our team can help with structural planning, dielines, artwork positioning and pre-production checks before the packaging enters production. Artwork should only be finalised after the box dimensions and structure are confirmed.

Existing artwork files can be reviewed against the approved dieline.
06 What information is needed for a quote?
