Embossing raises selected artwork above the surface, while debossing presses it inward to create a restrained tactile impression.

Choosing the right option

Both finishes use matched tooling and pressure to shape the printed material. They can be used blind, registered to ink or combined with foil for stronger contrast.

Board thickness, fibre direction, wrap construction and artwork detail influence achievable depth. Simple shapes and generous spacing generally hold the cleanest edges.

Frequently asked questions

Embossing & Debossing for Packaging FAQs

What is blind embossing?

Blind embossing shapes the material without ink or foil, relying on light and shadow for the effect.

Can small text be embossed?

It can, but very small counters and fine strokes may close up; artwork should be reviewed for tooling.

Does embossing weaken the board?

Correct tooling and placement normally control the impact, but embossing across creases or stressed areas should be avoided.
