Kraft Shipping Boxes

Custom kraft shipping boxes are corrugated dispatch cartons made around product size, packed weight and delivery conditions. Their natural brown kraft surface can remain plain or carry printed branding, while the board construction is selected to provide suitable protection for ecommerce, fulfilment, storage and parcel delivery. Buyer tip: provide the final packed weight as well as the internal dimensions when requesting a quote. Both affect the board and structural specification.

Structure & product fit

Build the packaging around the product

Packaging dimensions should start with the product and how it needs to be packed, protected, displayed, stored or transported. Internal space, board thickness, closures, inserts and assembly method can all affect the finished structural specification.

01

Measure the maximum product size Record the longest, widest and deepest points, including lids, closures, handles or projecting parts.

02

Define the required clearance Allow the space needed for packing, movement control, protective material or a fitted insert without unnecessarily increasing the box size.

03

Match structure to product weight Product weight, fragility and stacking requirements help determine suitable board strength and structural construction.

04

Consider how the packaging will be used Retail display, gifting, ecommerce, storage, fulfilment and transport can place different demands on the same packaging structure.

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE

Unless otherwise agreed, always confirm whether supplied measurements refer to the internal usable space or the external finished dimensions.

Packaging materials

Select material around the packaging requirement

There is no single board that suits every product. Material selection depends on structural strength, product weight, presentation, printing, storage, transport and any application-specific requirements.

Material family Typical role Surface & presentation Structural level
Kraft Paperboard Natural-looking cartons, sleeves, retail packaging and suitable lightweight structures. Brown or natural surface with distinctive print behaviour. Light–medium
Folding Boxboard Retail cartons, cosmetics, food, healthcare, gifting and other presentation-led applications. Smooth printable surface suited to detailed graphics. Light–medium
Corrugated Board Mailers, ecommerce, shipping, larger products and packaging requiring increased structural protection. Kraft or white liners with several printing routes available. Medium–high
Rigid / Greyboard Premium presentation boxes, luxury gifting and applications requiring a substantial non-folding construction. Usually wrapped with printed or decorative paper. High rigidity

Custom Kraft Shipping Boxes for Product Dispatch

Custom kraft shipping boxes are developed for ecommerce, fulfilment, parcel delivery and commercial product distribution where the packaging needs to provide more structural support than a lightweight retail carton.

The natural brown appearance comes from the kraft liner, while the protective performance comes from the complete corrugated construction. Product weight, box dimensions, flute, wall configuration and delivery conditions should therefore be treated as one specification rather than separate decisions.

Businesses using kraft across several packaging applications can explore the wider kraft packaging range to compare shipping cartons with retail, gift, food and mailer formats.

Kraft Linerboard and Corrugated Construction Are Not Same

A kraft surface does not automatically mean every box has the same strength. Corrugated board is built from liner papers combined with a fluted layer. A natural kraft liner can form the visible brown surfaces of the board, while the flute and overall construction provide much of the rigidity, cushioning and stacking performance required for shipping.

That distinction matters when comparing kraft paperboard with corrugated kraft shipping boxes. Smooth kraft paperboard can suit lightweight cartons and sleeves, but shipping applications commonly need a fluted structure where greater protection is required.

The corrugated board specification guide explains how product weight, void space, drop risk and stacking conditions influence flute and board selection.

Choose Internal Dimensions Around the Packed Product

For custom size kraft shipping boxes, start with the internal usable space rather than the outside dimensions of an existing carton.

Measure:

  • product length;
  • product width;
  • product height;
  • any fitted insert;
  • dividers or edge protection;
  • cushioning or other protective material; and
  • accessories packed with the main product.

The objective is not to eliminate every millimetre of clearance. The product needs enough space for efficient packing and any required protection. Too much space can allow movement and increase the amount of void fill required. Too little can place pressure on the product or leave insufficient room for inserts. For repeat ecommerce fulfilment, accurate internal sizing can also help keep packing more consistent across orders.

Single-Wall or Double-Wall Kraft Shipping Boxes

Single-wall corrugated board uses one fluted layer and can suit many general shipping applications where the product weight and handling conditions are moderate.

Double-wall construction adds another fluted section and can be considered where the product, carton dimensions, stacking load or distribution conditions require greater structural performance.

This does not mean every kraft delivery box should use double wall. An unnecessarily heavy specification can add material and bulk without solving a real packaging problem.

Craft Boxes identifies E-flute and B-flute as common starting profiles in corrugated packaging, but the appropriate flute and grade still need to be confirmed around the finished pack rather than selected from the flute name alone.

Structure the Box Around Shipping and Fulfilment

Kraft shipping boxes can use straightforward slotted cartons or more specialised die-cut structures depending on how the product is packed and dispatched.

Regular slotted constructions are useful where a conventional transit carton is required. Die-cut formats can provide more tailored closures or internal features when the product and packing operation justify them.

For broader shipping formats beyond the kraft finish, custom shipping boxes are a useful related option when the priority is transit protection, fulfilment and corrugated performance rather than a specific natural-brown appearance.

Closure should also be considered practically. Tape, locking panels or other sealing methods need to suit the filled weight and distribution route rather than simply the appearance of the empty carton.

Kraft Shipping Boxes vs Kraft Mailer Boxes

These two products overlap in ecommerce use, but they should not be treated as identical. Kraft shipping boxes are the broader option for dispatch, storage, fulfilment and transit. They can include conventional shipping cartons and other corrugated constructions where board strength, stacking and protection are central decisions.

Kraft mailer boxes are more specifically focused on die-cut, self-locking formats with fold-over lids. They work particularly well where compact ecommerce delivery, subscriptions or the opening experience matter alongside protection.

If the main question is “How should this product travel safely through fulfilment and delivery?”, start with the shipping-box specification. If a self-locking presentation-style postal format is central to the brief, compare the mailer option.

Protect Fragile or Movement-Sensitive Products

A corrugated outer box does not remove the need to control movement inside it. Fragile products, bottles, electronics or multi-item orders may benefit from:

  • fitted inserts;
  • corrugated dividers;
  • edge protection;
  • separate compartments; or
  • suitable cushioning and void fill.

The internal protection should be included when calculating the box dimensions. An oversized box filled with unnecessary void material is not automatically safer than a closer-fitting carton with a properly designed insert. Protection should follow the product’s vulnerabilities and expected handling.

Printing on Natural Brown Kraft

Printed kraft shipping boxes can carry logos, handling information, product identification or broader branded artwork. The brown kraft surface is not a neutral white background. Its tone can influence light colours and detailed graphics, so artwork should be reviewed against the chosen liner before production.

For suitable corrugated kraft applications, flexographic printing can be practical for logos, text and simpler artwork. Digital printing may suit more detailed or shorter requirements depending on the final specification.

For kraft shipping boxes with logo printing, restrained artwork often works particularly well because the natural surface remains part of the finished design. Branding should also leave practical space for courier labels, tape and other dispatch information.

Recyclable Kraft Shipping Packaging

Corrugated kraft is fibre-based and can often support a recyclable packaging specification, but recyclable kraft shipping boxes should not be treated as an automatic claim regardless of construction.

Coatings, laminates, adhesives, labels, inserts and other components can affect the complete pack and its end-of-life route.

Material efficiency also matters. Correct sizing and an appropriate board grade can help avoid unnecessary board and excessive internal void space.

Flat-Packed Storage for Commercial Buyers

Many conventional corrugated shipping structures can be supplied flat before use, which is helpful for ecommerce brands and fulfilment businesses storing packaging in volume.

When comparing wholesale kraft shipping boxes, consider more than the unit price. Assembly method, storage space, packing speed, board consistency and how frequently the size is used can all affect day-to-day fulfilment.

For businesses shipping several differently sized products, a small set of well-matched carton sizes may be more practical than using one large box for every order.

What to Confirm Before Requesting a Quote

To prepare a useful specification for custom kraft shipping packaging, provide:

  1. required internal length × width × height;
  2. product type;
  3. approximate final packed weight;
  4. product fragility or protection concerns;
  5. preferred shipping-box structure, if known;
  6. insert or divider requirements;
  7. plain or printed finish;
  8. logo and artwork status;
  9. required quantity; and
  10. how the boxes will be stored, packed and delivered.

You do not need to choose the flute or board grade yourself before asking for pricing. The more useful starting information is the product, packed weight, dimensions and delivery conditions.

Request a Quote: Send your box dimensions, approximate packed weight, required quantity and printing requirements so the kraft shipping-box specification can be reviewed around the actual dispatch job.

Kraft Shipping Packaging Boxes FAQs

Practical answers to common questions about dimensions, materials, printing and specifying kraft shipping boxes.

Ask about your project
01What are kraft shipping boxes?

Kraft shipping boxes are protective dispatch cartons with a natural brown kraft liner or surface, commonly using corrugated construction for ecommerce, storage, fulfilment and transit.

02Are all kraft shipping boxes corrugated?

No. Kraft is a material and surface description, while corrugated refers to a fluted board construction. Shipping applications often use corrugated kraft because of the additional structural protection it provides.

03What size kraft shipping box do I need?

Use the internal dimensions required by the complete packed product, including inserts, dividers or cushioning. Product weight should also be provided when the board specification is selected.

04What is the difference between kraft shipping boxes and kraft mailer boxes?

Kraft shipping boxes cover broader dispatch and transit structures. Kraft mailers are more specifically self-locking, die-cut formats commonly used for ecommerce, subscriptions and presentation-friendly postal delivery.

05Should I use single-wall or double-wall corrugated board?

It depends on the packed weight, box dimensions, stacking requirements and delivery conditions. Double wall can provide greater structural performance but is not necessary for every product.

06Which flute is best for kraft shipping boxes?

There is no single best flute. E-flute and B-flute are common starting points, but the final choice should follow product weight, protection, dimensions, stacking and print requirements.

07Can kraft shipping boxes be printed with a logo?

Yes. Kraft corrugated surfaces can carry logos and other suitable artwork. The natural brown surface should be considered when choosing colours and print coverage.

08Are kraft shipping boxes suitable for fragile products?

They can be, provided the corrugated board, box dimensions and internal protection are specified around the product. Fragile items may also require inserts, dividers or cushioning.

09Can kraft shipping boxes be supplied flat?

Many conventional corrugated shipping structures can be supplied flat before assembly, depending on the selected construction.

10Are kraft shipping boxes recyclable?

Many corrugated kraft formats can form part of a recyclable packaging specification, but coatings, labels, adhesives and other components should be considered before making a recyclability claim.

11Can custom kraft shipping boxes be ordered wholesale in the UK?

Yes. Once dimensions, board construction, printing and quantity are established, the specification can be produced for repeat commercial fulfilment requirements.

12What information is needed for a kraft shipping-box quote?

Provide the internal dimensions, product type, approximate packed weight, required quantity, preferred structure if known, and printing or artwork requirements.
