Get the Shipping Box Dimensions Right

The correct shipping box dimensions should be based on the product as it will actually be packed. Measure:

  • maximum product length, width and height;
  • protective inserts or dividers;
  • cushioning or void fill;
  • multiple products packed together; and
  • any projecting parts or accessories.

A box that is excessively large can allow products to move and requires more internal filling. A carton that is too tight may leave insufficient space for the protective components the product needs. When Do Heavy-Duty or Double-Wall Boxes Make Sense?

A double wall shipping box uses additional corrugated layers and can be considered for demanding applications, but it should not be selected automatically for every parcel. An unnecessarily heavy board increases material use and can make the packaging more cumbersome than the product requires.
