Kraft Candle Boxes

Custom kraft candle boxes are natural brown paperboard cartons made around candle jars for retail, gifting and branded presentation. The dimensions, structure and internal support can be developed around the actual jar, lid and packed weight, with plain or custom printed kraft surfaces to suit the brand. Buyer tip: measure the complete candle jar with its lid fitted. A 20cl or 30cl capacity does not tell you the finished box…

Structure & product fit

Build the packaging around the product

Packaging dimensions should start with the product and how it needs to be packed, protected, displayed, stored or transported. Internal space, board thickness, closures, inserts and assembly method can all affect the finished structural specification.

01

Measure the maximum product size Record the longest, widest and deepest points, including lids, closures, handles or projecting parts.

02

Define the required clearance Allow the space needed for packing, movement control, protective material or a fitted insert without unnecessarily increasing the box size.

03

Match structure to product weight Product weight, fragility and stacking requirements help determine suitable board strength and structural construction.

04

Consider how the packaging will be used Retail display, gifting, ecommerce, storage, fulfilment and transport can place different demands on the same packaging structure.

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE

Unless otherwise agreed, always confirm whether supplied measurements refer to the internal usable space or the external finished dimensions.

Packaging materials

Select material around the packaging requirement

There is no single board that suits every product. Material selection depends on structural strength, product weight, presentation, printing, storage, transport and any application-specific requirements.

Material family Typical role Surface & presentation Structural level
Kraft Paperboard Natural-looking cartons, sleeves, retail packaging and suitable lightweight structures. Brown or natural surface with distinctive print behaviour. Light–medium
Folding Boxboard Retail cartons, cosmetics, food, healthcare, gifting and other presentation-led applications. Smooth printable surface suited to detailed graphics. Light–medium
Corrugated Board Mailers, ecommerce, shipping, larger products and packaging requiring increased structural protection. Kraft or white liners with several printing routes available. Medium–high
Rigid / Greyboard Premium presentation boxes, luxury gifting and applications requiring a substantial non-folding construction. Usually wrapped with printed or decorative paper. High rigidity

Printing & finishing

Develop the print specification around the material

Printing and finishing options should be selected after the material and structure are understood. The suitable production route depends on the substrate, artwork, colour requirements, quantity, surface area and intended appearance.

01
PRINTING Choose the print process from the job specification
Digital PrintingSuitable for compatible substrates and projects where digital production provides the appropriate quality and production route.
Lithographic / OffsetUsed where detailed graphics, controlled colour and suitable production volumes justify lithographic printing.
Flexographic PrintingCommonly considered for suitable corrugated, kraft and transport-packaging applications.
Spot / Brand ColoursSpecific colours can be considered where brand consistency or restricted-colour artwork requires them.
02
FINISHING Add surface treatments only where they support the brief
Lamination & CoatingsMatte, gloss or other suitable surface treatments can alter appearance, handling and surface protection.
FoilMetallic, coloured or decorative foil can highlight selected branding or graphic elements.
Embossing / DebossingRaised or recessed areas can introduce tactile depth where the board and structure support the process.

Custom Kraft Candle Boxes: Measure Jar, Not 20cl

Custom kraft candle boxes should be sized around the actual candle vessel rather than a generic candle capacity. Two jars both described as 20cl can have different diameters, heights, lids and base profiles, which means they may require different cartons.

Start by measuring the complete jar as the customer will receive it. Include the lid, any projecting rim and the clearance required for easy packing.

Brands using natural kraft across several products can explore the wider kraft packaging range when coordinating candle cartons with other kraft formats. For broader candle structures and presentation options, the candle packaging range provides the more general category route.

Choosing Boxes for 20cl and 30cl Candle Jars

A 20cl kraft candle box or 30cl kraft candle box should never be sized from capacity alone.

Before preparing the dieline, confirm:

  • maximum jar diameter;
  • total height with lid fitted;
  • lid width and profile;
  • base shape;
  • approximate packed weight;
  • required clearance; and
  • insert dimensions where used.

A carton that is too tight can make the candle difficult to pack or place pressure on the lid. Excessive clearance can allow a glass jar to move inside the box. This is particularly important where several jar suppliers are used, because nominally similar capacities do not necessarily share identical external dimensions.

Folding Cartons, Tuck Ends and Stronger Bases

Straight tuck and reverse tuck cartons are practical starting structures for many lightweight retail candle boxes. They provide straightforward top-and-bottom closures and useful printable panels.

For a heavier glass jar, the base construction deserves additional attention. A locking or crash-lock style may be worth considering where the product weight and packing method justify it, but the final structure should be confirmed against the actual jar rather than assumed from the product name.

If the structure is still undecided, the box styles guide helps compare folding cartons with other packaging formats before dimensions and artwork are finalised.

A folding kraft carton is primarily secondary retail packaging. Glass jars being sent through parcel networks may still require stronger outer shipping protection.

When Candle Jar Inserts Are Useful

Not every kraft box for candles needs an insert. A correctly sized carton may provide enough control for a lighter jar. A cardboard insert becomes more useful where:

  • the glass jar needs additional positioning;
  • the outer carton is deliberately wider;
  • the base needs support;
  • several components share the box; or
  • presentation requires the jar to remain centred.

The insert should be included when calculating the internal box dimensions. Adding one after the carton has already been sized can make the fit unnecessarily tight. For smaller candle products, votive candle packaging boxes provide a related format worth comparing rather than simply scaling a jar-candle carton down.

Kraft Candle Box with Window for Product Visibility

A kraft candle box with window can reveal the candle jar, label or wax colour before the carton is opened. The window should be positioned around the actual jar and any insert. It should show a useful part of the product rather than exposing empty space or an awkward section of the label.

A windowless carton provides more uninterrupted board area for branding, fragrance information and other printed content. It can also be structurally simpler. Neither format is automatically better. The choice depends on whether product visibility or uninterrupted printed presentation matters more for the range.

Natural Kraft Board and Candle Presentation

Natural kraft paperboard gives the box its characteristic brown appearance and visible fibre character. That surface can suit candle brands wanting restrained or material-led presentation.

Board stiffness should still be selected around carton dimensions and jar weight. A small lightweight candle does not necessarily require the same specification as a larger glass jar.

The term kraft should also not be treated as a guarantee of recyclability, recycled content or any other environmental property. Those claims depend on the actual board, coatings, adhesives, windows and finishes used in the finished packaging.

Brown Kraft Printing Should Stay Clear of Creases

Custom printed kraft candle boxes can carry a logo, fragrance name, collection artwork and other product information. The brown substrate influences the final appearance of printed colours. Pale colours and fine low-contrast artwork may not reproduce as they would on white paperboard, so designs should be reviewed against the selected kraft surface.

For kraft candle boxes with logo printing, simpler high-contrast artwork can often work effectively. More detailed print or decorative finishes may also be considered where they are technically suitable for the selected board and confirmed as part of the production specification. Important artwork should stay clear of creases, glue areas and locking panels.

Leave Space for Candle and Safety Information

Kraft candle boxes are secondary packaging; they are not heat-resistant containers intended to remain around a candle while it burns. Artwork should leave sufficient room for any product, fragrance, usage or safety information required for the particular candle.

Depending on the formulation, fragranced candles can fall within GB chemical classification and labelling requirements, so required hazard or precautionary information should be established for the actual candle rather than copied from another fragrance or product. The packaging should provide usable space for the information the candle business determines is required, but the box itself does not guarantee regulatory compliance.

No Minimum Order Requirement at Craft Boxes UK

For kraft candle boxes wholesale, consistent dimensions become particularly important when a brand repeatedly packs the same jar. Where several fragrances use the same vessel, the underlying carton specification may remain consistent while printed fragrance information changes between variants.

Before repeat production, test the box using the actual candle jar and confirm:

  1. jar diameter and height;
  2. lid type and clearance;
  3. approximate packed weight;
  4. preferred box structure;
  5. insert requirement;
  6. window or windowless format;
  7. artwork and printing requirements; and
  8. required quantity.

Craft Boxes UK has no minimum order requirement, so quantity can be based on the actual project.

Product questions

Kraft Candle Packaging Boxes FAQs

Practical answers to common questions about dimensions, materials, printing and specifying kraft candle boxes.

Ask about your project
01What are kraft candle boxes?

Kraft candle boxes are natural brown paperboard cartons used as secondary packaging for candle jars, retail candles and gift products.

02What size box do I need for a 20cl candle?

Measure the actual jar diameter and total height with the lid fitted. A 20cl capacity does not correspond to one universal jar or box size.

03Are 30cl candle boxes a standard size?

No. Different 30cl vessels can vary in diameter, height and lid design, so the carton should be developed around the specific jar being used.

04Can kraft candle boxes include inserts?

Yes. Inserts can help position glass jars or reduce movement where the carton dimensions or presentation require additional support.

05Can kraft candle boxes have windows?

Suitable structures can include a die-cut window where product visibility is useful. The window position should be planned around the actual jar and any insert.

06Are kraft candle boxes suitable for glass jars?

They can be suitable as secondary retail packaging. Heavier or fragile glass jars may need an insert, stronger carton construction or additional outer protection for shipping.

07Can kraft candle boxes be custom printed?

Yes. Kraft cartons can carry logos, fragrance names and suitable branded artwork, although the brown board affects how printed colours and contrast appear.

08What is the difference between windowed and windowless candle boxes?

Windowed cartons provide product visibility, while windowless boxes provide more uninterrupted paperboard area for branding and printed information. The better option depends on the retail presentation.

09Are kraft candle boxes recyclable?

Some kraft cartons may form part of a recyclable packaging specification, but windows, coatings, adhesives, laminates and other components can affect the finished pack. The actual specification should be reviewed before making a recyclability claim.

10Do candle boxes need safety information?

The required information depends on the candle formulation and applicable rules. Fragranced candles may require specific hazard or precautionary labelling, so the artwork should provide enough usable space for the information required for that product.

11Is there a minimum order for custom kraft candle boxes?

No. Craft Boxes UK has no minimum order requirement.

12What information is needed for a quote?

Provide the jar diameter and height, lid type, approximate packed weight, preferred structure, insert requirements, artwork, printing requirements and quantity.
